Manipur School Construction

About this project

This project will support the construction of a school in the Phubala Village, Bishnupur District, Manipur state. It will provide education to 125 children and will have a separate room for Kitchen, Staff Room, and Science and Computer Lab. The additional classrooms in the new building will help the school to obtain permission from the Government to start classes till 10th grade.

This school is located among a largely fisherman community in a coastal village of Phubala, in the Bishnupur district of Manipur state. Before the school was started, this area was facing issues of militancy. The leader of the militants, started this school in 2010, inspired by the work done by the Art of Living Foundation, after attending a rehabilitation program by the Foundation.

With the help of local villagers, volunteers, and rehabilitated militants, the school was started in a small land that was donated, for the local community children. The school has brought about a transformation in the local community where education was never considered a priority. As per the latest Census data, the current literacy rate there stands at 73%.

Currently the school has an enrollment of 125 students, including 63 girls, from surrounding 5 villages. Owing to a lack of infrastructure facilities, the number of students has come down. The school building is in need of immediate repairs and upgrades. The proposed new school building will have a separate kitchen, staff room, and Science & Computer Lab. The additional classrooms in the new building will help the school to obtain permission from the Government to start classes till 10th grade.
